Arrival in Ribadeo: The Journey Begins
After nearly 15 hours of travel from San Francisco to Ribadeo, we finally arrived at the edge of Spain tired, a little punchy, and deeply relieved to be standing still with our feet on the ground, as they will be for the next ten days. Long international travel days have a way of stretching time, but there’s something special about that moment when the destination stops being an idea and becomes real.
We eased into our first evening the best way possible: a relaxed dinner together, followed by ice cream and churros. It was a small, humble celebration after a very long day. Laughter returned, shoulders dropped, and the kids began to settle into one another and into this new place. Simple rituals like sharing food and dessert go a long way in helping a group land, especially after such a big journey.
Navigating the First-Day Challenges
As with most group travel (especially with teenagers), our arrival hasn’t been without its challenges. A lingering cough that a couple of the girls are currently on antibiotics for has caused some physical discomfort and, understandably, a bit of tension within the group. Fatigue amplifies everything, and first days can feel tender as everyone adjusts to jet lag, shared spaces, and being far from home.
What’s been encouraging is how the group is already beginning to navigate this together. There’s been patience, check-ins, and a noticeable softening as the evening went on. By bedtime, everyone seemed more grounded and settled, a reminder that rest is often the best medicine on day one.
The Threshold Moment
Arrival days are rarely glamorous. They’re messy, quiet, and full of transition. But there’s something meaningful about crossing this threshold together. Today wasn’t about walking miles or reaching a destination; it was about arriving in Spain, in the group, and in the shared journey ahead.
Tonight, Ribadeo feels like a safe container to begin. Tomorrow, we take our first steps on the Camino.
Looking Ahead
There’s a gentle excitement in the air as we prepare for our first day of walking. Packs are ready, intentions are forming, and the road is waiting. The Camino has a way of meeting people exactly where they are—and today, where we are is tired, hopeful, and standing at the very beginning.
We’re grateful to be here, together.
Onward—step by step. ☺️
